the new flowers of the anthropocene
blacks run Stream, harrisonburg, vA. 2018- ongoing.
Blacks Run Stream is an eight-mile, heavily polluted waterway running through the city of Harrisonburg, Virginia. These flower formations are occurring through currents of water carrying bits of detritus. Taking cues from botanical renderings of generations past, I am clip the “flowers” and taking them back to my studio to photograph. They are given a name and have corresponding name cards. They carry qualities of beauty and abject, and are a direct artifact of human’s influence on natural systems.
